Accessibility and Aging in Place
Whether you are adapting a newly purchased home or making changes to age in place, we start by listening. Tell us which rooms are difficult to navigate, what equipment you use and what you want to do more comfortably.
Home accessibility is about fitting the space to the person. Private homes generally are not subject to the ADA rules that apply to public accommodations, though other requirements may apply to a particular property or funded project. We discuss those requirements during planning rather than treating every home as a commercial facility.

Accommodations
Depending on your needs and the layout of your home, improvements may include:
- Wider doorways and clearer routes between rooms
- Grab bars and handrails
- Lowered counters and easier-to-reach storage
- Entry ramps
- Tub-to-shower conversions and accessible shower layouts
We consider how these features work together, including maneuvering space, flooring and fixture placement. If an occupational therapist or another specialist has recommended changes, bring those recommendations to the consultation.

Making Homes Easier to Use
Accessibility improvements can be a focused project or part of a larger bathroom renovation or kitchen remodel. We’ll help you define the scope and choose finishes that fit the rest of your home.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a bathroom accessible without redoing the whole house?
Yes. Depending on the existing space, improvements such as grab bars, a different vanity, a wider doorway or an accessible shower can be planned as a single-room project.
What if my project is funded through a grant or MDCP?
Tell us about the program before work is planned. Ask your program contact to confirm eligibility, covered modifications, provider requirements and any approvals needed before construction. Those requirements vary by program and project.
Do you hold an accessibility certification?
The Rockaway Company does not hold a specific accessibility certification. We provide accessibility remodeling services; formal compliance reviews and any required specialist inspections are separate from our construction work.
Where can I learn about the requirements for my property?
The ADA.gov guide to businesses open to the public explains the federal commercial context. The Texas Architectural Barriers program provides information about Texas accessibility requirements. For a private home, start with your local building department and any program funding the work.
